If you want to see advanced English, don't look at legalese; look at professional academic writing in the humanities. That's the natural home of complex vocabulary, syntax, and meaning. Simple speech is appropriate in many situations, but "big" words can pack a lot of meaning. Just today, I remarked that my grandson had become fastidious. My listener knew what I meant.

When did we forget that language is for communication? Was it when people turned it into a subject or discipline? It is so human, so deep, so rooted so as to turn it into an object. We've got to go to the basics in all aspects of life :) Language commodified at such a scale is truly a crime :)) Great video, Christian.

Sir, I had an opposite understanding of C1 and C2 levels as being able to use more commonly used native phrases, sentence structure, and vocabulary that is not difficult but more commonly used by native speakers. For example, instead of saying he is like an animal at the party C1 would say he is a party animal. Instead of saying I am trying to get the soaked biscuit out of my tea cup, a C1 would say I am trying to fish out the biscuit from the cup. To me, C1 and C2 levels make English more easy and friendly. I agree with the point that uncommon complex vocabulary is itself a hurdle in effective communication but some very intelligent teachers are now basing C1 and C2 on commonly used compound phrases and good sentence structure rather than making it about complex vocabulary. However, your conversation today has some deeper meaning and intellect when people use English not as an effective communication tool but rather to impress or undermine others.

A former student of mine from China told me that they look at the algorithms to prepare them for the possible questions. Yes, they may be able to answer the questions or obtain high scores. Yet, and this is the big yet, they still have difficulty communicating in the real world. Thank you Christian for this insight. We need to see beyond the exams as a measure of language ability or proficiency. It is also not a level playing field. For developing countries, the cost of the exam is staggering. Additionally, preparing for the exams is likewise costly. All in all, that would be about two to three months' worth of salary. Higher-level exams are also not available in most developing countries. Only selected developing countries offer the CAE.

1:20 No. The reason why they're considered advanced is because their meaning carry more nuance than broad-meaning words. The fact that they're used with less frequency is only a consequence of that. Learning advanced language has nothing to do with stockpiling vocabulary for the sake of it, it's about learning to convey ideas more accurately, by using words that carry a more precise meaning, or are more context-appropriate. The point is not to sound like a bombastic smart-ass, the point is to learn to speak in a way that carries deeper meaning.

WHAAAA. There I thought as a kid that there was something wrong with me when I had encountered a similar "Jar Situation". I thought there was a human marking these tests, but again imagine how likely it is to become so rigid once you are exhausted by a 1000 of these. Thanks for the relief)). Hopefully all these LLMs like chatGPT can solve that problem. They seem smart enough to allow for such small variation, which could mean a lot if were an about to be student. Anybody agrees? Also this olympiad made me think of aptitude test I had to take. Which is basically an abstract, spacia logic and an IQ test. I also did not like it, because I felt there is a cheat to it. Now looking at how people are able to hone a skill of grammar problems in an unknown language, makes me think that exactly the same can be done with the IQ test. It's a matter of how quick you find answers to these abstract pictures. Sorry my brain does not compute these, YET. But it does not mean it cant compute a physics problem well enough (I even got an award in my school for it). I just think university are ought to be a upfront to it. Just state "We need hard working students" literraly and not "this test checks if your brain is good enough". Uh, how is this claim supported and validated? So yeah, some motivation talk for a random reader of this comment, never let an exam ruin your self esteem. Put enough effort and time at it and you will get it!
